Easter is right around the corner, and the weather is heating up. The world is awakening once more after winter’s chill, and along with it, a lot of the pests that you got to take a few months from having to deal with. Some pests will likely be out in full force, thanks to the continuous movement of the circle of life. Traditionally speaking, it’s common for the young of certain pests to dramatically increase their movements around the Easter season. So what pests should you be keeping an eye out for?
Mating and birthing season for squirrels happens biannually. One of the birthing seasons takes place in early spring between February and April. That puts them leaving the nest around April and May. Squirrels can fit through some pretty small spaces and may search for shelter around, and sometimes even in your home. They may enter through holes or openings in windows and roofs, open doors and windows, and even your chimney and fireplace. You may notice damage around your home, strange noises, strong odors, or an increase in the local squirrel population, all signs that you may have a squirrel problem.
Rabbits can make cute pets, but wild rabbits are more pests than anything else. Like squirrels, the peak of the rabbit breeding season happens in spring, between the months of March and May. A female may give birth to between 3-8 baby rabbits in a single litter. With that many more rabbits running around, there’s a significant increase in the chances that you’ll find them on your property. Rabbits can damage electrical wiring and your walls, spread disease, fleas, and ticks, and can smell downright awful. They may be cute, but you’ll definitely want to keep them away from your home.
Mice and rats are rodents that can multiply faster than you would believe. Mice and rats tend to breed whenever there is a good opportunity, which means being warm and safe. That’s something that is more likely to happen during the Easter season. Given that a single female will give birth in about 3 weeks and that a single litter can have anywhere from 6-12 babies, it’s easy to see how the population can quickly get out of hand. Rather than deal with hundreds of mice or rats in your home, keep an eye out for them this Easter season so you can have any problem dealt with sooner rather than later.
It’s always best to stop a pest invasion early in its tracks rather than to allow it to get out of hand. With the movement of young squirrels, rabbits, and other small rodents dramatically increasing, you’ll need to stay on your toes this Easter season. If it’s more than you want to try to handle on your own, you can always pass the responsibility of pest control over to the Proterra Pest Control professionals. We’ll take good care of you!
